The Northshore is beautiful any time of year, but it is completely breathtaking in the fall!
The colors were at their peak this visit!
Two Harbors – love this town! Visit: Lake Superior Agate Bay, Two Harbors Lighthouse
Iona’s Beach on the Gitchi-Gami State Trail – pink rocks, and when conditions are rights the rocks make noise when you walk across them almost sounding like windchimes!
Cross River Falls – so pretty! nice break to enjoy the falls and stop across the street at Schroeder Baking Company for a sandwich!
Cross River Bay – fall colors reflected in the water was gorgeous.
Lutsen Mountain – WOW! Amazing fall colors! Take the gondola ride to the top of Moose Mountain – it is worth the cost! Be sure to go to Mystery Overlook once you reach the summit! If you are hungry and don’t mind paying a little more than down in the valley, grab a bite at the Summit Chalet.
Gooseberry Falls – again, pretty any time of year! Always a “must see” on the north shore drive!
Splitrock Lighthouse – stop and take in the view of the lighthouse just down the road for a nice photo. Go up to the lighthouse for a tour, and walk the paths around the lighthouse.
Betty’s Pies or Rustic Inn for pie. (I prefer Rusic Inn myself)
Castle Danger Brewery in Castle Danger – fun place, friendly staff.
Tettegouche State Park – hike to the upper falls! beautiful photo op!
Caribou Lake – very calm and pretty, if only to stop and take in the view for a few minutes.
Grand Marais – my favorite town up north! Interesting, fun, artsy, great food, touristy areas and all the shops are great!
Stayed at Best Western Plus Superior Inn – balcony overlooks the water – can hear the waves crashing on the beach.
Supper at My Sister’s Place was good.
Judge Magney State Park – Hike to Devil’s Kettle Falls on the Brule River! The trails are very nice.
Grand Portage National Park and Grand Portage National Monument – Nice place to check out. Visitor’s Center and gift shop. From there you can take the trail up to the High Falls. Do it!
Supper at Birch Terrace in Grand Marais. Not quite the level of food we have experienced there in the past.
Artist Point – could sit here all day 🙂 walk out to the point at sunset!
Don’t miss: World’s Best Donuts – they really are!!
Great place for breakfast – South of the Border – very good food and very reasonable prices.
Every time I have to leave the Northshore to head back home I always say “until next time Lake Superior!” I love her so!
